Who We AreMayuri is University of Maryland's annual premiere Indian Classical Dance Competition. On March 9th, 2013, Mayuri Executive Board hosted its first competition. With more opportunities for showcasing this unique art, Mayuri hopes to expand the interest for Indian Classical dance and provide teams a venue to flourish, learn and compete as dancers, artists, and students. This year marks the fourth anniversary of this national competition, and we couldn't be more excited!

The Meaning of Mayuri“Mayuri”, or peacock, is a reoccurring symbol within Hindu arts and scriptures, and is the national bird of India. Resembling grace, pride, and beauty, the peacock has been depicted in various forms of the classical dances of India, as the dancer emulates the refinement of one of nature’s greatest creatures. In every aspect of classical Indian dance, the elegance of the peacock is shown through the dancer’s feet, hand gestures, and facial expressions.
